A new trawler with a Kongsberg system and an HPP protein factory
On May 5th, the fisheries company Brim celebrated the arrival in Reykjavík of the newest member of its fleet, the 82-meter stern trawler Ilivileq GR 2-201. The vessel is equipped with an HPP protein factory and is fitted with Kongsberg Maritime systems and machinery. Ilivileq will be operated by Brim’s subsidiary in Qaqortoq, Greenland.
Ilivileq was designed by Rolls-Royce Marine (now Kongsberg Maritime) for fuel-efficient operation by introducing a wave-piercing hull design, an HSG engine system, and a Promas propulsion system. The NVC 375 WP design builds on a long tradition of designing trawlers for polar seas, resulting in efficiency for fishing in challenging waters. The design is renowned for its low resistance, low power requirements, and comfort at sea.
The HPP protein factory on board makes the production of fishmeal and fish oil at sea more efficient than before. It enables vessels to fully utilize all raw materials and thereby create valuable products. The HPP system has a raw material capacity of up to 50 tons per day.
Construction of the trawler began in late 2017 at the Astilleros Armon shipyard in Spain. The vessel is powered by a Bergen B33:45 L9P main engine with 5,400 kW. The B33:45 is the most powerful engine in its class, delivering 600 kW per cylinder in a compact design. It sets a new industry standard in terms of fuel efficiency, low emissions, and reduced lifecycle cost.
On board is the new Kongsberg Electric Winch system with Permanent Magnet (PM) motors. With direct drive and high torque, the motors offer a response level similar to low-pressure hydraulic winches. The PM motor drives the winch drum directly, i.e., without a gearbox.
The trawler Ilivileq is also equipped with a Hybrid Shaft Generator system, which automatically runs the main engine at the most economical speed according to the propeller curve. The new integrated Acon-R control and monitoring system tracks all alarms and manages pumps, valves, and tanks on board.
The trawler has a production capacity of more than 150 tons per day, with freezer space for over 1,000 tons along with a 690-cubic-meter fishmeal hold.
Ilivileq is the most modern freezer trawler currently sailing the North Atlantic.
