Photographs from the Anniversary Exhibition The Art in Héðinn’s Workshop

The photographer Snorri Björnsson captured these atmospheric images at the well-attended art exhibition hosted by Héðinn and the National Gallery of Iceland in the company’s workshops at Gjáhella 4 on Saturday, October 1. The exhibition was open for this single day only, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and was a joint project between the National Gallery of Iceland and Héðinn in celebration of the company’s centennial. The works on display came from a remarkable gift made by the family of Markús Ívarsson, Héðinn’s founder.

The artworks on display came from a distinguished gift by the family of Markús Ívarsson, founder of Héðinn, to the National Gallery of Iceland. Among the exhibits were various gems of Icelandic art from the last century, including several pieces that had not been seen by the public for a long time.

Markús Ívarsson (1884–1943) was a trained blacksmith and a passionate collector of works by artists of his time. In this way, he consciously supported various artists who lived under difficult conditions.

Artists whose works were featured in the exhibition included: Ásgrímur Jónsson, Brynjólfur Þórðarson, Eggert M. Laxdal, Eyjólfur Eyfells, Finnur Jónsson, Greta Björnsson, Guðmundur frá Miðdal, Guðmundur Thorsteinsson (Muggur), Gunnar Gunnarsson, Gunnlaugur Scheving, Höskuldur Björnsson, Jóhann Briem, Jóhannes S. Kjarval, Jón Stefánsson, Jón Þorleifsson, Karen Agnete Þórarinsson, Snorri Arinbjarnar, Svavar Guðnason, Sveinn Þórarinsson, Þorvaldur Skúlason, and Þórarinn B. Þorláksson.

The exhibition team on behalf of the National Gallery of Iceland consisted of Anna Jóhannsdóttir and Nathalie Jacqueminet, while the exhibition designer was Axel Hrafnkell Jóhannesson.
