Héðinn tidies up at Sorpa

A team from Héðinn has been busy installing new sorting equipment at Sorpa’s waste reception and sorting station in Gufunes.

Sorpa’s role is to receive and process waste from the entire capital area, and its operations are therefore extensive. An extension to the reception and sorting facility for household waste was built in 2019 to accommodate a new sorting system. Household waste is now sorted in various stages, with the organic fraction separated from the inorganic. Materials are transferred to the brand-new facility, GAJA, where complex and advanced methods are used to produce compost and biomethane. At GAJA, household waste is mixed with construction material and placed into specialized processing units. There, biological material is washed out of the mixture and pumped into anaerobic stations where biogas production takes place. The solid materials remaining in the processing units are then used for composting.

Héðinn’s Steel Structures

Héðinn’s project in the new sorting plant consists of fabricating and installing support structures and platforms for the machinery, installing processing equipment, and connecting and adapting the new platforms of the extension to the older part of the reception and sorting station.

The purpose of this operation at Sorpa is to increase the sustainability of waste management. Landfilling will be significantly reduced, as household waste is effectively utilized for compost and energy.

Operations begin now in June. More photos can be seen below.
