Power and Geothermal

Mechanical engineering for Iceland's power and geothermal plants

Iceland's power supply is built on geothermal and hydroelectric generation, and these plants rely on heavy piping, pressure equipment, and steel structures that must perform under continuous load. Keeping them running calls for engineering and fabrication built for industrial conditions.

Héðinn works with power and geothermal facilities across the country, with work ranging from process piping and structural steel fabrication to the manufacture, installation, maintenance, and repair of critical plant and power generation equipment. Much of the plants' main process equipment, including heat exchangers, deaerators, and steam separators, is manufactured in-house. This work has included laying a long transmission pipeline to increase a geothermal plant's electricity and heat production, the kind of large-scale mechanical project the company is equipped to deliver.

Piping, pressure vessels, steel structures, and on-site service are available from the same team, so operators can plan projects and maintenance with one engineering partner.

Reference project: Hverahlíð Pipeline II

ON Power contracted Héðinn to lay a new steam transmission pipeline from the Hverahlíð boreholes to the Hellisheiði Power Plant: earthworks, pipeline installation, electrical installations, and construction work in one project.

4450 m
steam pipeline from Hverahlíð to Hellisheiði

Hverahlíð Pipeline II runs alongside the existing supply lines, mostly above ground and through existing concrete culverts.

300
fifteen-metre pipes welded into the line

One-metre-diameter pipes on concrete foundations, joined section by section along the route.

1 km
of circumferential welds by the on-site team

Each joint is circumferentially welded in place, about a kilometre of welding across the project as a whole.

From plant requirement to completed work

Power and geothermal projects follow a structured sequence from scope through fabrication, installation, and service.

1
Step 1

Define the scope

Héðinn works with the operator to establish the mechanical scope, site constraints, and standards.

2
Step 2

Engineering and fabrication

Piping, vessels, and steel structures are engineered and fabricated in the workshop.

3
Step 3

On-site installation

Héðinn installs and integrates the work at the plant, coordinating around operations.

4
Step 4

Service and maintenance

Ongoing mechanical service and maintenance keep the plant running between projects.
